Noted flutist Dipak Sarma was laid to rest on Tuesday, November 4, at the Navagraha Crematorium in Guwahati with full state honours. His final rites were marked by solemnity, reverence and deep emotion, as Assam bid farewell to one of its most cherished musical icons. Fans, well-wishers and admirers gathered in large numbers to pay their last respects to the maestro whose melodies had touched countless hearts.
Earlier in the day, Sarma’s mortal remains were brought to Guwahati from Chennai aboard a special chartered flight. From the airport, his body was taken to his residence in Ambikagiri Nagar, where close family members performed traditional household rituals. Following these rites, his mortal remains were placed at Ambikagiri Nagar Seuj Sangha for the public to offer their tributes, where thousands came forward with flowers, prayers and tears.
As the coffin arrived at Seuj Sangha, an emotional silence filled the space. The gentle sound of a bamboo flute resonated through the gathering, merging with soft sobs and whispered prayers—a final, fitting tribute to the artist whose music embodied the soul of Assam. With his cremation at Navagraha, Assam said its final goodbye to a legend, closing the chapter on a life dedicated to art, culture and the haunting beauty of the flute.
