Gopichand, who belonged to the second generation of the Hinduja family, took over as chairman following the death of his elder brother Srichand in May 2023.

Gopichand P. Hinduja, chairman of the Hinduja Group and one of the most influential figures in global business, passed away at the age of 85 in a London hospital. He was the second of the four Hinduja brothers, following the death of his elder brother Srichand Hinduja in 2023. He is survived by his brothers Prakash and Ashok Hinduja. Widely known as ‘GP’, he was regarded as the driving force behind the group’s international expansion.

Gopichand joined the family business in 1950 and played a pivotal role in transforming it from a traditional Indo-Middle East trading enterprise into a global conglomerate. Under his leadership, the Hinduja Group expanded into 11 sectors including automotive, banking and finance, IT, healthcare, infrastructure, real estate, power, and media. The group owns major brands such as Ashok Leyland, IndusInd Bank and NXTDIGITAL. A graduate of Jai Hind College in Mumbai, he was also awarded honorary doctorates by the University of Westminster and Richmond College.

Earlier this year, the Sunday Times Rich List (2025 edition) ranked the Hinduja family as the richest in the United Kingdom, with an estimated net worth of £32.3 billion. In recent years, the family was also in the public spotlight due to a high-profile legal dispute involving the late Srichand Hinduja’s daughters and their uncles over family assets and governance. Despite controversies, Gopichand Hinduja remained a towering figure in global business and philanthropy until his final days.
