Ajit Singh Chaudhary, the student, had been pursuing an MBBS degree at Russia’s Bashkir State Medical University since 2023.

A 22-year-old Indian medical student from Rajasthan has been found dead in a dam near Ufa, nearly three weeks after going missing.

Ajit Chaudhary, from Kafanwada village in Alwar district, was enrolled in the MBBS program at Bashkir State Medical University. He was reported missing on October 19 after his mobile phone went offline, and his clothes and shoes were found on a riverbank.

Russian authorities recovered his body on Thursday, several kilometres from the university campus. Chaudhary’s family had sold land to fund his studies abroad and have appealed to the Indian Ministry of External Affairs and the embassy in Moscow for help with repatriation and investigation.

Local officials in Alwar have expressed shock over the incident and called for greater scrutiny of Indian students studying abroad. Russian police are investigating the circumstances surrounding his death.
