Prime Minister Narendra Modi

Prime Minister Narendra Modi will visit Bhutan from November 11 to 12 to review bilateral relations and participate in the inauguration of the 1,020-MW Punatsangchhu-II hydroelectric project, a joint initiative between India and Bhutan. The visit aims to further reinforce the “special ties of friendship and cooperation” between the two neighbouring countries, in line with their tradition of regular high-level exchanges, the Ministry of External Affairs said on Saturday, November 8.

During the visit, Prime Minister Modi will hold meetings with King Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuck and Prime Minister Tshering Tobgay of Bhutan. The two leaders will jointly inaugurate the Punatsangchhu-II hydroelectric project, a major symbol of India-Bhutan energy collaboration. Modi will also participate in celebrations marking the 70th birth anniversary of former King Jigme Singye Wangchuck, recognising his contributions to Bhutan’s development and Indo-Bhutan friendship.

The visit will also coincide with the exposition of the sacred Piprahwa relics of Lord Buddha, sent from India to Bhutan. Prime Minister Modi is scheduled to offer prayers to the holy relics at Tashichhodzong in Thimphu and attend the Global Peace Prayer Festival organised by the Bhutan government, further highlighting the spiritual and cultural bond shared between the two nations.
