India suffered an alarming moment on Saturday, November 15, evening when captain Shubman Gill was taken to the hospital in an ambulance after a freak on-field injury cut short his innings on Day 2 of the first Test against South Africa at Eden Gardens. What initially appeared to be a minor interruption quickly escalated into a medical emergency, casting doubt on Gill’s participation in the remainder of the match.
The injury occurred early in India’s first innings when Gill attempted a slog-sweep against Simon Harmer. Although the shot raced to the boundary, he immediately clutched the back of his neck in visible discomfort and called for medical attention. After a brief assessment by the physio, the opener walked off retired hurt on four from just three deliveries, and at the time it seemed like a precautionary move.
Concern deepened later in the day when Gill was seen being transported out of the stadium on a stretcher, wearing a cervical collar and surrounded by medical staff, according to PTI. The sudden escalation left the team and fans anxious about the seriousness of his condition and the impact on India’s plans for the remainder of the Test.
