The Election Commission of India directed a ‘Special Revision’ of the electoral roll in Assam ahead of the assembly elections scheduled to take place in the northeastern state next year

The ECI has announced a special revision of the electoral roll in Assam, directing state officials to prepare a fresh and updated voter list under a separate schedule. The Commission said the decision was taken in view of Assam’s “unique legal and administrative circumstances,” particularly the ongoing citizenship verification processes that differentiate the state from the rest of the country.

According to officials, the revision will not follow the nationwide Special Intensive Revision (SIR) currently underway in several other states. Instead, Assam will have a distinct, state-specific timeline to ensure that the electoral roll accurately reflects verified citizens and eligible voters. The Election Commission has indicated that the exercise aims to remove discrepancies, update demographic details, and include citizens who have newly attained voting age.

Assam’s Chief Electoral Officer has already instructed district election authorities, Electoral Registration Officers, and Booth Level Officers to begin preparations for the revision. These preparations include voter-mapping exercises, verification of legacy data, identification of households with unusually high numbers of registered voters, and updating entries related to centenarian voters.

Officials say detailed guidelines and the final schedule for the revision will be issued soon. The update is expected to be crucial ahead of upcoming elections, ensuring a transparent and accurate electoral roll for the state.
