Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma on Tuesday, November 18, announced a major breakthrough in the investigation into the mysterious death of singer Zubeen Garg in Singapore. The Union Home Minister Amit Shah has granted the mandatory sanction required to initiate legal proceedings against the accused, marking a decisive step forward in the high-profile case.
The sanction was granted under Section 208 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS). Elaborating on the provision, the Chief Minister explained that Section 208 necessitates prior approval from the Central Government before any Indian court can take cognizance of an offence committed outside the country. With this clearance now secured, the Assam Government and the Special Investigation Team (SIT) are legally empowered to file the chargesheet and pursue trial proceedings against those implicated.
Sarma reiterated the state’s unwavering commitment to securing justice for the late music icon, confirming that the chargesheet will be submitted before December 10, 2025. He described the Centre’s approval as a significant legal milestone that strengthens the groundwork of the case and enables authorities to proceed with renewed firmness.
The announcement came on a day laden with deep emotional significance — the 53rd birth anniversary of Zubeen Garg. Across Assam, fans, family members, and admirers observed the day with prayers, tributes, and remembrance events, underscoring the profound void left by the singer’s passing.
“Today marks the 53rd birthday of our beloved Zubeen Garg — a day that reminds us of his music, his voice, and his irreplaceable place in Assam’s heart,” Sarma said, adding that the government remains steadfast in its pursuit of justice for the late legend.
