Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar submitted his resignation to Governor Arif Mohammad Khan on Wednesday, November 19, following the NDA’s decisive victory in the assembly elections. The move comes after he was unanimously elected as the NDA legislature party leader, paving the way for his record 10th oath-taking ceremony scheduled for November 20 at Patna’s Gandhi Maidan.
Earlier, JD(U) MLAs gathered at the Chief Minister’s residence and elected Nitish Kumar as their party leader without dissent. In a joint NDA meeting at the state assembly, BJP’s Samrat Choudhary proposed Nitish’s name for alliance leadership, which was approved unopposed. Allies including Choudhary and Vijay Sinha are expected to serve as deputy leaders, with Nitish likely to address the media post-resignation or delegate the task given his low-profile election campaign.
The NDA secured a total of 202 out of 243 assembly seats, with BJP winning 89 seats, JD(U) 85, and smaller partners taking the remaining seats. The victory ensures a stable coalition government in Bihar, with cabinet portfolio allocations currently under discussion.
