Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju said the house should be allowed to work smoothly and that the government will keep on holding discussions with all parties to ensure smooth proceedings.

Opposition parties today pressed for a detailed discussion on the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls during an all-party meeting held ahead of the winter session of Parliament. They raised concerns over alleged overwork and reported deaths of booth-level officers, questioning the Election Commission’s recent decision to extend the SIR timeline by seven days across 12 states and Union Territories.

Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju described the meeting as positive and constructive, noting the participation of 36 parties and 50 leaders. He acknowledged that several opposition leaders demanded a debate on SIR but clarified that the Business Advisory Committee alone has the authority to set the parliamentary agenda.

Rijiju added that no party expressed an intent to obstruct the upcoming session, though some hinted at disruptions if the SIR issue is not addressed. He said the government is open to discussion and urged all parties to ensure smooth functioning of Parliament despite differences over specific matters.
