Shreyas Iyer has been handed the captaincy of India A for the two multi-day matches against Australia A, starting September 16 in Lucknow. The appointment comes shortly after his omission from India’s Asia Cup squad, despite his impressive form in the shorter formats, both in domestic cricket and the IPL.
Iyer, who last featured in Tests for India in February 2024 against England, has since been overlooked for the longest format. However, he made a strong case with a successful Ranji Trophy 2024-25 campaign for Mumbai, where he amassed 480 runs in seven innings at an average of 68.57, including two centuries. Overall, in 81 first-class matches, the stylish batter has scored 6363 runs at 48.57 with 15 hundreds and 33 fifties.
Alongside Iyer, the India A squad features notable names such as Devdutt Padikkal, Nitish Kumar Reddy, Prasidh Krishna, and Khaleel Ahmed, with wicketkeeper Dhruv Jurel serving as vice-captain. The squad will also be boosted midway through the series when senior players KL Rahul and Mohammed Siraj join in, replacing two members after the first match.
