Nepal was thrown into deeper political chaos on Tuesday as both President Ram Chandra Poudel and Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli resigned within hours of each other. Their departures followed days of escalating unrest that has gripped the country, with mounting public fury over corruption, cronyism, and perceived authoritarian measures.
The wave of protests, led primarily by young Nepalis from Gen Z, erupted after Oli imposed a controversial ban on social media platforms last week. Though the ban was hastily revoked early Tuesday after demonstrations spiraled out of control, it failed to quell public outrage. Protesters have continued to defy curfews and confront heavily armed security forces on the streets of Kathmandu and beyond.
By Tuesday evening, the death toll from the unrest had climbed to at least 22, with hundreds more injured in violent clashes. The simultaneous resignations of Nepal’s top leaders have created a power vacuum in the fragile Himalayan nation, raising fears of further instability as the public’s anger shows no sign of easing.
