Veteran India leg-spinner Amit Mishra

Former India wrist-spinner Amit Mishra announced his retirement from all forms of cricket on Thursday, September 4, bringing the curtains down on a career that spanned over two decades. Mishra represented India in 22 Tests, 36 ODIs, and 10 T20Is, claiming a total of 156 wickets. He made his international debut in 2003 against South Africa and later impressed on Test debut in 2008 versus Australia, where he picked up 7 wickets in the match, including a memorable five-for. His last international outing came in 2016 during the Chennai Test against England.

At 42, Mishra leaves behind a rich legacy in the Indian Premier League (IPL), where he is ranked as the eighth-highest wicket-taker with 174 scalps from 162 matches. Known for his guile and consistency, he also holds a unique record in the tournament — the most hat-tricks in IPL history, having achieved the feat three times (2008, 2011, and 2013).

Announcing his decision on social media, Mishra wrote: “Today, after 25 years, I announce my retirement from cricket — a game that has been my first love, my teacher, and my greatest source of joy. This journey has been filled with countless emotions — moments of pride, hardship, learning, and love. I am deeply grateful to the BCCI, Haryana Cricket Association, my coaches, support staff, colleagues, and most importantly, the fans, whose faith and support gave me strength at every step.”
