Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Tuesday, November 4, assured full cooperation from the state government to the Judicial Commission probing the death of renowned singer Zubeen Garg. The commission, headed by Justice Soumitra Saikia of the Gauhati High Court, has formally begun its investigation into the circumstances surrounding the singer’s death. CM Sarma, in a post on X, described the formation of the Judicial Commission as a “landmark step in the pursuit of truth and justice” and stressed the importance of transparency and public cooperation in the inquiry.
He further stated that all individuals arrested in connection with Zubeen Garg’s death are currently under judicial custody and have been charged with murder. The Chief Minister reiterated that this development is not new, as it has been the government’s stance from the beginning of the case. He added that the Special Investigation Team (SIT) would submit its chargesheet by December 8, adhering to legal procedures mandating that a chargesheet in cases involving murder or life imprisonment be filed within 90 days of arrest. To ensure procedural clarity, the government has calculated the timeline from the date of the incident.
Zubeen Garg, a beloved icon of Assamese music, reportedly died by drowning in a swimming pool on September 19 in Singapore, where he had gone to perform at the Northeast India Festival. His death has sparked widespread grief and calls for a thorough investigation. CM Sarma emphasized the government’s commitment to uncovering the truth and ensuring justice for the late artist through a fair and impartial inquiry.
