Zubeen Garg, Assam’s cultural icon, passed away at the age of 52 in Singapore.

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has announced that he will personally receive the mortal remains of legendary singer Zubeen Garg upon their arrival in Delhi and will accompany the body back to Guwahati. The singer, widely regarded as one of Assam’s most iconic cultural figures, passed away in Singapore on September 19, 2025, following a scuba diving incident.

The body is expected to reach Assam on September 21 via a special aircraft, and the Chief Minister will ensure its safe transport to Guwahati. Prior to repatriation, the post-mortem examination of Zubeen Garg’s body was completed in Singapore, as confirmed by Sarma. The mortal remains will be handed over to the accompanying team for transportation to Assam.

Authorities have announced that the public tribute will take place at Sarusajai Stadium in Guwahati, where thousands of fans and admirers are expected to gather to pay their respects. The event is anticipated to be a major occasion, reflecting the widespread grief, admiration, and love for the singer, whose contributions to Assamese music and cinema spanned decades.

Earlier, Chief Minister Sarma, along with his wife RinikiBhuyan Sarma, visited the late singer’s residence in Guwahati to offer condolences to the family.
