Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said the government plans to bring the Uniform Civil Code in the very first session of the next Assembly.

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Thursday, November 27, announced that the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) will be the first major legislation his government brings if the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) returns to power in the upcoming Assembly elections.

Speaking at the Assembly, Sarma said the state is “ready for a unified civil framework” and that the government intends to introduce the UCC in the very first session of the next Assembly.

In a direct challenge to the opposition, the Chief Minister declared: “Stop me if you can. But if you cannot, I will bring the Uniform Civil Code.”

Sarma said the UCC is essential for creating uniformity in civil laws governing marriage, divorce, inheritance and adoption across all communities. He reiterated that the measure would apply equally to all religions, emphasising that it is a “reform for equality, not targeted legislation.”

The UCC promise is expected to be a key campaign plank for the ruling alliance, potentially reshaping Assam’s socio-political landscape if implemented. While the government frames the move as a step toward legal uniformity, opposition parties have indicated they will scrutinise the proposal when formally introduced.
