A political controversy has erupted in Assam after the Bangladesh national anthem, “Amar Sonar Bangla,” was sung at a Congress Seva Dal meeting in Karimganj district. A video of the incident from Sribhumi town has gone viral, drawing sharp criticism from the ruling BJP and social media users. The BJP has accused the Congress of promoting a “Greater Bangladesh” agenda and using such acts to appeal to specific vote banks.
Assam Minister Ashok Singhal condemned the incident, alleging that the Congress has long encouraged “illegal Miya infiltration” to alter the state’s demography for political gain. Sharing the viral video on X, he claimed the singing of Bangladesh’s anthem reflects Congress’s hidden motive to separate the northeast from India.
The Assam BJP unit also hit out at the Congress, calling it “Bangladesh-obsessed.” It linked the event to a recent controversy involving Bangladesh’s interim chief Muhammad Yunus, who reportedly gifted a Pakistani general a book with a map showing Assam and other northeastern states as part of Bangladesh. The BJP argued that the Congress’s actions, coming so soon after this incident, clearly expose its alleged agenda.
