The BBC has issued an apology to US President Donald Trump after a Panorama episode featured a misleadingly edited version of one of his speeches. However, the broadcaster has declined his request for compensation, stating there is no basis for a defamation claim.
In its statement, the BBC said chair Samir Shah had written personally to the White House, expressing regret over the error. The corporation acknowledged that the edit unintentionally made it appear as though it was presenting a continuous segment of Trump’s speech rather than excerpts, creating a false impression that he had directly called for violence.
The broadcaster further confirmed that it will not rebroadcast the documentary on any of its platforms, closing the matter with its public retraction and apology.
