The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) and the Assam Cricket Association (ACA) have announced a special tribute to the late Zubeen Garg during the opening ceremony of the Women’s ODI World Cup 2025. The ceremony is scheduled for September 30 at Barsapara Cricket Stadium in Guwahati.

Zubeen Garg, a beloved Assamese singer and cultural icon, tragically passed away in a scuba diving accident in Singapore. He was renowned for bringing Assamese music to national prominence, notably with his performance of ‘Ya Ali’ in the film Gangster (2006).

In honour of his legacy, the ACA, in collaboration with the BCCI, will feature special performances during the opening ceremony. BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia confirmed that a 40-minute segment dedicated to Zubeen Garg is being planned, with renowned playback singer Shreya Ghoshal scheduled to perform. The final details of the artist lineup are expected to be confirmed shortly.

“Recently, the music icon of Assam, Zubeen Garg, passed away. Today, his mortal remains have arrived in Guwahati and will be kept for 1–2 days for public homage. There is massive grief in Assam. In keeping with this situation, and as a person who deserves respect, the Assam Cricket Association, possibly along with the BCCI, will hold a tribute program during the opening of the ICC Women’s Cricket World Cup 2025. We are planning something, and by this evening we will finalize it. There will be about a 40-minute program in the name of Zubeen Garg,” said BCCI Secretary Devajit Saikia.

The Women’s ODI World Cup 2025 marks the third time India will host the tournament, following previous editions in 1997 and 2013. The opening match will feature India facing Sri Lanka.

This tribute underscores Zubeen Garg’s enduring impact on Assamese music and culture, reflecting the deep respect and admiration he garnered throughout his career.
