The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has formally written to Asian Cricket Council (ACC) President Mohsin Naqvi, demanding the immediate handover of the 2025 Asia Cup trophy to Team India. The board has also warned of escalating the issue to the International Cricket Council (ICC) if the matter is not resolved soon.
India won the 2025 Asia Cup final against Pakistan on September 28 in Dubai, but the post-match presentation ceremony took an unexpected turn. The Indian team reportedly refused to receive the trophy from Naqvi – who also serves as Chairman of the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) – amid strained political relations between the two countries. As a result, the trophy was not handed over on the field and is currently held at the ACC headquarters in Dubai.
According to reports, BCCI Secretary Devajit Saikia sent an email to Naqvi stating that the delay in presenting the trophy is “unacceptable” and violates the standard tournament protocol. The message warned that the BCCI would escalate the issue to the ICC if no response is received within a reasonable timeframe.
The ACC, on its part, has maintained that certain formalities need to be completed before the handover can take place. However, the BCCI insists that the trophy rightfully belongs to the winning team and must be delivered without further delay.
This unusual standoff has sparked controversy across the cricketing world, with many calling it an unprecedented situation in modern cricket history. The incident also underscores how diplomatic tensions between India and Pakistan continue to spill over into the sporting arena.
The BCCI is now expected to raise the issue formally during the next ICC board meeting if the ACC fails to act promptly.
