The mother of the RG Kar Medical College student, who was raped and murdered last year in Kolkata, has accused West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee’s police force of physically assaulting her during a protest on Saturday, August 9. She said she was on her way to join a march to the state secretariat, Nabanna, organised to mark the first anniversary of her daughter’s death, when she was allegedly roughed up by women police personnel.
According to her, the scuffle led to her traditional ‘shankha’ (conch shell bangle) being broken and left her with a head injury. Visibly distressed, she questioned why the authorities were preventing them from reaching Nabanna, stressing that all they wanted was justice for her daughter.
Participants in the rally demanded Mamata Banerjee’s resignation, accusing her government of failing to protect women in the state. The incident has further fuelled public outrage over the handling of crimes against women in West Bengal.
