Canadian PM Justin Trudeau resigns as party leader

Justin Trudeau has announced his resignation as Prime Minister of Canada, ending a nearly decade-long tenure. The decision comes amid growing dissent within his own party, with Liberal Party legislators pressuring him to step down ahead of the upcoming federal elections.

In a press conference, Trudeau stated, “I intend to resign as party leader, as prime minister,” confirming he would vacate office once the Liberal Party selects a new leader. The move follows concerns within the party that his continued leadership could hinder their chances in the upcoming elections.

“I have informed my party and the Governor that I intend to resign as leader of the party as well as prime minister of Canada, and will do so as soon as the my successor is appointed,” Trudeau said.

“I hereby prorogue the Parliament until March 24 in order to initiate the process of finding a new leader to lead the party and Canada until elections scheduled for later this year,” he added.
