Amid ongoing Opposition protests over the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of voter rolls across 12 states during the Winter Session of Parliament, the Narendra Modi government on Tuesday, December 2, clarified that it is not ready to discuss the SIR at the moment. According to reports, the government will continue to push forward with its legislative agenda despite Opposition protests.
However, government sources confirmed that the Centre is open to a broader discussion on electoral reforms, which is scheduled to take place on December 10. While the SIR remains off the discussion table for now, the government appears willing to engage on wider issues concerning electoral processes in India.
Sources also revealed that the government suggested prioritizing a discussion on the 150th anniversary of Vande Mataram, which falls on November 7. The Centre informed Opposition leaders that this matter should be taken up first, before delving into other topics like electoral reforms or voter roll purification.
