Cheteshwar Pujara, one of India’s most dependable Test batters, has announced his retirement from international cricket. Taking to X, the 37-year-old confirmed that he is stepping away from all forms of Indian cricket as well. Pujara last represented India in the World Test Championship (WTC) final against Australia in 2023, after which he was not considered for selection as the team transitioned away from experienced names like him and Ajinkya Rahane.
In his heartfelt note, Pujara expressed the pride he felt donning the Indian jersey, singing the national anthem, and giving his all for the team. “It’s impossible to put into words what it truly meant. But as they say, all good things must come to an end, and with immense gratitude I have decided to retire from all forms of Indian cricket. Thank you for all the love and support!” he wrote, acknowledging the unwavering backing he received throughout his career.
Pujara’s contribution to Indian cricket has been immense, especially in the Test arena where he was the backbone of the batting line-up at number three after Rahul Dravid’s retirement. In a career spanning 103 Tests and five ODIs, he amassed 7,195 Test runs at an average of 43.6, including 19 centuries and 35 fifties, with a highest score of 206 not out. While he never established himself in limited-overs cricket, his grit, resilience, and match-saving knocks in the longest format made him one of India’s most respected modern-day Test specialists.
