A Mumbai Magistrate court has issued a formal notice to actor Rhea Chakraborty, seeking her response to the Central Bureau of Investigation’s (CBI) closure report in the high-profile death case of actor Sushant Singh Rajput.
The CBI, which has been investigating the matter since taking over from Mumbai and Bihar police, submitted its closure report in March 2025, concluding that no criminal wrongdoing was found against the accused individuals.
Magistrate R.D. Chavan, while hearing the matter, ordered that notice be served to the – “original informant / victim / aggrieved person” -in this case, Chakraborty. The court has directed her to respond by August 12, and proceedings have been adjourned until confirmation of notice delivery.
The notice is part of standard legal procedure, allowing the complainant a chance to contest or object to the closure of the case by the investigative agency.
Chakraborty had initially filed a complaint in 2020 against Sushant Singh Rajput’s sisters — Priyanka Singh and Meetu Singh – and Dr. Tarun Nathu Ram, alleging that they facilitated the unlawful procurement of prescription medication for Rajput. She claimed that a forged prescription was used to obtain the drugs and expressed concerns over the handling of Rajput’s mental health, stating he was diagnosed with bipolar disorder but often discontinued treatment.
Her complaint led to an FIR under various sections of the IPC and the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act.
Rajput, 34, was found dead at his Bandra residence on June 14, 2020, sparking nationwide outrage, speculation, and multiple investigations. In a separate FIR, Rajput’s father accused Chakraborty and her family of financial exploitation and abetment of suicide – allegations Chakraborty has consistently denied in public interviews.
With the CBI having found no basis for criminal charges in its closure report, the court will next take up the matter after Chakraborty files her response.
