MS Dhoni will captain CSK for the remainder of IPL 2025 after Ruturaj Gaikwad was ruled out of the tournament with an elbow fracture

MS Dhoni has scripted yet another historic moment in the Indian Premier League (IPL) by becoming the oldest-ever captain to lead a franchise. At 43 years and 278 days, Dhoni returned to lead Chennai Super Kings (CSK) in IPL 2025 after regular skipper Ruturaj Gaikwad was sidelined with an elbow injury.

Dhoni, who had stepped down as CSK captain following the 2023 season, was reappointed midway through the current campaign, marking a remarkable comeback. With this, he not only took charge of the team once again but also broke his own previous record as the oldest captain in IPL history. His earlier record was set during the 2023 season when he led CSK against Gujarat Titans at 41 years and 326 days.

The updated list of the oldest captains in IPL now sees Dhoni occupying the top two positions. Former Australian legend Shane Warne ranks third, having led Rajasthan Royals at 41 years and 249 days in 2011. He is followed by Adam Gilchrist, who captained Kings XI Punjab at 41 years and 185 days in 2013.

Indian stalwarts Rahul Dravid and Sourav Ganguly also feature on the list. Dravid led Rajasthan Royals at the age of 40 years and 133 days in 2013, while Ganguly captained Pune Warriors India at 39 years and 316 days in 2012.

Dhoni’s return to captaincy has sparked renewed enthusiasm among CSK fans, as the franchise eyes yet another successful run under his leadership.
