Sri Lanka is reeling from the impact of Cyclone Ditwah, which has triggered widespread floods and landslides across the island nation. Authorities have confirmed that 56 people have been killed, while dozens remain missing as rescue operations continue in several affected districts.
According to the Disaster Management Centre (DMC), torrential rains over the past 48 hours have inundated major towns, washed away homes, and cut off key roads, leaving thousands stranded. More than 44,000 residents have been impacted, with many evacuated to temporary relief shelters.
Military teams, supported by helicopters, rescue boats, and emergency response units, have been deployed to search for missing persons and provide aid to isolated communities. Officials report that over 600 houses have suffered severe damage due to landslides and flooding.
In response to a request from Colombo, India has deployed its aircraft carrier INS Vikrant to assist with relief and rescue efforts. The vessel is carrying essential supplies and specialized personnel to support ongoing humanitarian operations.
Meteorological authorities have warned of continued heavy rainfall in several districts, urging residents in vulnerable areas to remain on high alert. Relief agencies are working round-the-clock to distribute food, medical aid, and temporary shelter materials as conditions remain unstable.
