Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced on Monday, October 6, that the government will soon release a summary of the Special Investigation Team (SIT) report concerning Congress MP Gaurav Gogoi’s alleged connections with Pakistan.
The SIT was established on February 17, 2025, following a state cabinet decision to investigate the activities of Pakistani national Ali Tauqeer Sheikh, who is reportedly linked to Gogoi’s wife, Elizabeth Colburn Gogoi, a British national.
The Chief Minister described the report as “damning and damaging,” stating that the government intends to disclose its contents to the public in the coming days. However, he noted that the full report cannot be released due to the inclusion of confidential information and personal statements. Documents annexed to the report will also be made available.
Gogoi, who serves as the Deputy Leader of the Congress in the Lok Sabha, has denied any wrongdoing, asserting that the allegations are part of a smear campaign orchestrated by the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). He has previously stated that his visit to Pakistan in 2013 was unrelated to his parliamentary duties and was undertaken when his wife was employed there as part of a climate change project.
The SIT report was submitted to Chief Minister Sarma on September 10, 2025. The release of the report’s summary was delayed due to the passing of Assam’s cultural icon Zubeen Garg on September 19, 2025.
The investigation has intensified political tensions in Assam, with the ruling BJP and opposition Congress exchanging sharp criticisms over the matter.
