The IPL 2025 season is set to kick off on Saturday, March 22, with the defending champions Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) facing Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) at Eden Gardens, Kolkata.
However, the match is at significant risk of being completely abandoned, as the weather department has issued an Orange Alert. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted thunderstorms and rain for South Bengal from March 20 to March 23. For March 22, the opening day of IPL 2025, an Orange Alert has been issued, while a Yellow Alert is in place for March 23.
The match, scheduled to start at 7:30 pm in Kolkata, is at risk due to these adverse weather conditions. Additionally, the IPL 2025 opening ceremony is set for 6:00 pm on March 22. According to the IMD, thunderstorms, lightning, and rainfall are expected to affect parts of Kolkata, caused by an anticyclonic circulation over the Bay of Bengal.
Notably, the BCCI has not made provisions for a reserve day for the IPL 2025 opening match between KKR and RCB. This means that if the match is washed out due to rain, both teams will earn one point each and proceed to their next matches.
Both KKR and RCB are starting their IPL 2025 campaigns with new captains – Ajinkya Rahane for KKR and Rajat Patidar for RCB. Both teams will be eager to begin their season on a positive note, provided they get a chance to play on March 22.
