This year, Eid-al-Adha, also known as Bakrid is celebrated today, and Muslims across the globe are celebrating the 'festival of sacrifice' with much gusto and fervour. Today is a special day and is the second of the two most Islamic holidays celebrated worldwide every year.

The first one being Eid-al-Fitr, and the second one is Eid-al-Adha, considered the holier of festivals. Bakrid falls on the 10th day of Dhu al-Hijjah as per the lunar calendar.

In Assam, Muslims were seen offering prayers (Namaz) early in the morning and offering sacrifice to Allah following all Covid-19 protocols.

The Assam government had issued a strict guideline asking all Muslims to offer prayers in their homes. In Masjids the congregation of more than five people was not allowed.

This festival is celebrated to commemorate the willingness of Ibrahim to sacrifice his son as an act of obedience to God's command. According to the Quran, it is said that before Prophet Ibrahim could sacrifice his son, God provided a ram to sacrifice instead.

Today, Muslims across the world sacrifice a male goat and divide it into three parts - one-third of the share is given to the poor and needy, another third is given to relatives, friends and neighbours; and the remaining is distributed among the family.

Sumptuous food items are prepared on this occasion like Mutton Biryani, Shami Kebab, Nalli Bhuna, Sheer Khurma, Shahi Tukda, and many more.

While the excitement of Eid-al-Adha is at its peak, we mustn't forget that we are dealing with a deadly pandemic and social distancing, wearing masks and keeping hands sanitized should be on the top of the list to fight the virus.

Lastly, Happy Eid Mubarak to all!
