The Nagaland government on Thursday through a notification rectified the nomenclature Yimchunger Naga to Yimkhiung Naga.
The notification issued by Chief Secretary J Alam stated, "The Governor of Nagaland is pleased to rectify the nomenclature of "Yimchunger" Naga to "Yimkhiung" Naga. Henceforth, the name "Yimkhiung" shall be used in all official correspondence."
It further read, "This is issued with the approval of the Cabinet in its meeting held on the 31st of July 2021..."
It may be mentioned, Yimkhiung is a Naga tribe from the Tuensang and Kiphire districts of the State and is one of the six backward tribes of Eastern Nagaland. The word Yimkhiung means the ones who have reached their place of choice.
The Yimkhiung tribe inhabits the Eastern part of Nagaland and is one of the major recognized tribes of Nagaland. The tribe is endowed with rich history, culture, customs, traditions and practices.
The tribe was the first-ever community to commence war upon the Indian soldiers in 1955 at Huker village. The tribe possesses a rich history of freedom fight for Naga Independence and immense contribution towards the building of New Nagaland.
