The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Saturday nominated Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal as the party's candidate for the upcoming Rajya Sabha election in Assam.
Sonowal will be contesting for the Rajya Sabha seat that has been vacant since Assembly Speaker Biswajit Dailmary resigned. He resigned from the seat and also from Bodoland People's Front party and joined Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) before the assembly polls that were held earlier this year.
Currently, Sonowal is the MLA of Majuli constituency. He won the State Assembly elections from the mentioned seat earlier this year.
The Election Commission of India (ECI) on September 9 announced the dates of by-polls to seven Rajya Sabha seats that have fallen vacant owing to various reasons including resignations, deaths, end of tenures and more.
According to the notification issued by ECI, there are two seats in Tamil Nadu, one each in Assam, West Bengal, Maharashtra, Puducherry and Madhya Pradesh.
