Amid political violence, Trinamool Congress (TMC) youth wing president Saayoni Ghosh has been arrested on Sunday by Tripura Police on attempt to murder charges.
A case has been registered against Ghosh under sections 307, 153 of IPC. She will be produced in court on Monday.
Ghosh has been accused of disturbing a political programme involving CM Biplab Kumar Deb on Saturday. The tensions between the BJP and TMC have spilled ahead of the civic polls.
The TMC youth leader has allegedly tried to mow down BJP workers with her vehicle at a public meeting, BJ Reddy, additional superintendent of police (urban) West Tripura said, as quoted by news agency PTI.
Post the incident, Trinamool MP Abhishek Banerjee tried to reach Tripura but he was denied permission to land.
Later, in a tweet, TMC said: "Our National Gen Secy Shri @abhishekaitc will reach Tripura tomorrow morning to stand beside our workers who were BRUTALLY ATTACKED by BJP goons. Permission to land today was denied. An autocrat is running the show in Tripura and we will fight tooth & nail to end this torture!"
Meanwhile, a delegation of more than 15 TMC MPs will reach Delhi on November 21 night to stage protest against "police brutality" faced by party workers in Tripura. The delegation have also sought an appointment with Union Home Minister Amit Shah.
Earlier in the day, TMC MP Sushmita Dev has alleged that she was attacked by the “BJP goons” at the Agartala Police Station. However, the BJP has denied the allegations.
Dev shared a video clip on twitter claiming she and party workers were attacked while they were being questioned at the police station. "We have been attacked by the @BJP4Tripura goons while we were being questioned inside the East women police station by @Tripura_Police in the case filed against @sayani06. We are surrounded by armed men with weapons & wearing helmets," Dev said in a tweet.
She added, "They have attacked the Thana again where @sayani06 is under arrest and also attacked our Convenor Shubol Bhowmick’s house in Agartala. @Tripura_Police I have been trying to call the IG & DGP but to no avail. This is mayhem."
The TMC accused the BJP and Deb of orchestrating the attack.
"@BjpBiplab has become so UNABASHEDLY BRAZEN that now even SUPREME COURT ORDERS DOESN'T SEEM TO BOTHER HIM.He has repeatedly sent goons to attack our supporters & our female candidates instead of ensuring their safety! DEMOCRACY BEING MOCKED under @BJP4Tripura. #NotMyINDIA," tweeted Banerjee.
"This is the HORRIFIC state of affairs in Tripura under @BjpBiplab's Gunda Raj!While our leaders & workers are being MERCILESSLY ATTACKED every moment, @Tripura_Police continues to shield the @BJP4Tripura assailants! Urging the Hon'ble Supreme Court to take strict actions," the TMC had tweeted.
It added, "@BjpBiplab, your intimidation won't break our spirit. We are street fighters, we cannot be cowed down."
