A photo of a Trinamool Congress (TMC) leader posing with a gun in a government office in Malda district of West Bengal has gone viral on social media on Tuesday.

In the viral photo, Mrinalini Mandal Maiti, president of the old Malda Panchayat Samiti and president of the Malda District Women's TMC, was seen holding a revolver with her left hand while seated on the government official's chair at the BDO office.

As per reports, Maiti has denied that it is a gun and claimed that she is holding a toy gun in the photo.

This photo triggered a war of words between the TMC and Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).

The BJP has accused the Trinamool Congress of encouraging a culture of violence. "Mrinalini Mandal, president of the old Malda Panchayat Samiti and a TMC leader, takes a selfie with a firearm while sitting in a government office. Attempts to assassinate democracy continues. Democracy is dying a painful death in Bengal!," BJP Bengal wrote on Twitter.

On the other hand, the TMC called for an investigation to determine whether the gun was real or a toy.
