An Indian Air Force (IAF) Mi-17V5 helicopter with Chief of Defence Staff Gen Bipin Rawat, his wife and senior defence officials on board crashed in Tamil Nadu's Coonoor on Wednesday.
As per reports, three people have been rescued so far and a search operation is going on to locate the others. Two people have been confirmed dead in the incident.
Gen Rawat was on board with 14 others on the chopper.
The rescued people suffered serious injuries and have been taken to a hospital at Wellington cantonment in Nilgiris district where they are undergoing treatment.
CDS Bipin Rawat, his wife, Madulika Rawat, defence assistant to the CDS, Brigadier LS Lidder, security officer to the CDS, Lt. Colonel Harjinder Singh, NK Gursewak Singh, NK Jitendra Kr, L/Naik Vivek Kumar, L/ Naik B Sai Tej and Hav Satpal were on board the Mi-series chopper along with him when it crashed between Coimbatore and Sulur in Tamil Nadu.
CDS Bipin Rawat was en route to Wellington in Coonoor from the Indian Air Force base in Sulur near Coimbatore, as per reports.
Visuals from the crash site have gone viral on social media where massive flames are seen and locals are helping with the rescue operations.
The Indian Air Force confirmed the incident on Twitter and said an inquiry has been ordered to ascertain the cause of the accident.
