Back box provides crucial data on the chain of events that led to the crash

Defence officials on Thursday morning retrieved the flight recorder of the ill-fated M 17V5 helicopter of the Indian Air Force that crashed near Coonoor in Ooty on Wednesday, leading to the loss of lives of Chief of Defence Staff General Bipin Rawat, his wife Madhulika, and 11 other armed personnel.

The black box was recovered by a 25 special team of Air force officers led by Wing Commander R. Bhardwaj. It would provide crucial data on the chain of events that led to the tragedy on the Nilgiri hills on Wednesday.

The black box was found after its search area was expanded from 300 metres to one km from the accident spot by the Defence officials.

Meanwhile, a six-member special medical team from Coimbatore is attending the treatment of the lone survivor in the Coonoor helicopter crash, Group captain Varun Singh who is struggling for his life at the Wellington Army hospital.

It may be mentioned that Rawat was on his way to the Defence Services Staff College (DSSC), Wellington to deliver a speech to the young cadet officers when the fatal mishap happened in the Katteri-Nanchappanchathram area.
