In yet another incident of pre-poll violence, a Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) worker close to a Manipur minister, along with his cousin, was gunned down in Manipur.
Unidentified miscreants shot Abujam John (57), who was close to Agriculture Minister O Lukhoi, and his cousin Abujam Sashikanta, a havildar in the India Reserve Battalion, were shot dead near John’s house around 10 pm on January 9 night at Samurou Bazaar in Imphal West district.
Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh assured action against the guilt and termed the incident as political violence in the poll-bound Northeast state.
As per reports, a group of miscreants arrived and opened fire on both the persons near Machu Cinema Hall at Samurou. While John died on the spot of the incident, Sashikanta succumbed to his injuries in the hospital on Monday morning.
Following the two killings, protests have erupted at various places in Manipur where hundreds of locals have been agitating demanding justice for the victims.
The Manipur Chief Minister has also visited the bereaved families of the deceased on Monday morning and condemned the incident. A case has also been registered and investigations are currently underway, Biren Singh informed the media persons.
The election for the 60 assembly seats of Manipur will be conducted in two phases on February 27 and March 3.
