The Yogi Adityanath government in Uttar Pradesh is suffering a major setback as it is losing some top ministers ahead of the Assembly Elections in the State. On Thursday, the State government lost the third minister, Dharam Singh Saini who is a backward caste leader.

This is the eighth exit from Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in three days in Uttar Pradesh. All the leaders are said to join Akhilesh Yadav's Samajwadi Party.

Saini after resigning from BJP met Yadav, who welcomed the latter to his party.

Meanwhile, Saini interacting with reporters said, "I resigned because for five years, Dalits, backward classes were suppressed, their voices were suppressed. We will do whatever Swami Prasad Maurya will say. One minister and three to four MLAs will resign every day till January 20."

It may be mentioned, just 24 hours before, Saini, a four-time MLA from Nakud in Saharanpur and a key OBC leader, had rubbished reports of him leaving the BJP.

He had also slammed Maurya who was the first minister to quit the party.

"My name was wrongly given in Swami Prasad Maurya's list that is floating around. I had no idea. I am and will be in the BJP. I am not leaving the party," Saini had said in a video.

Saini was the Minister of State (MoS) (independent charge), Ayush, Food Security and Drug Administration in the Uttar Pradesh government.

Earlier on Thursday, Mukesh Varma, the legislator from Shikohabad in Firozabad, also resigned from the saffron party.
