The National Technical Advisory Group on Immunisation (NTAGI) has recommended that the second dose of Covid-19 vaccine Covishield can be administered within a gap between 8-16 weeks after the first dose, according to the latest reports.

Presently, the second dose of SII's Covishield is given between 12-16 weeks after the first dose.

However, India's top body on immunisation has not yet suggested any change in the schedule of Bharat Biotech's Covaxin. Currently, Covid-19 vaccine Covaxin's second dose is administered 28 days after the first dose.

Notably, the recommendation for Covishield is yet to be implemented in the national Covid vaccination programme.

Based on the recommendations by NTAGI, the Government of India had on May 13, 2021, extended the gap between the first and second doses of the Covishield vaccine from 6-8 weeks to 12-16 weeks.

A total of 1,81,21,11,675 doses have been administered so far under Nationwide Vaccination Drive till 7 am on Sunday. This has been achieved through 2,13,75,059 sessions.
