The cricket legend Mahendra Singh Dhoni on Thursday decided to step down as the captain of the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) and handed over the leadership to all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja. The development was also confirmed by the official Twitter handle of the IPL team, adding that Dhoni will continue "to represent Chennai Super Kings this season and beyond."
CSK in a statement said, "MS Dhoni has decided to hand over the leadership of Chennai Super Kings and picked Ravindra Jadeja to lead the team. Jadeja, who has been an integral part of Chennai Super Kings since 2012, will only be the third player to lead CSK."
"Dhoni will continue to represent Chennai Super Kings this season and beyond," the franchise added in the statement.
With the announcement, Dhoni's fans flooded Twitter with tributes and thanked him for his contribution to Indian cricket as well as CSK. Many called it an "end of an era" while others said that "Dhoni has left behind a legacy which is incredibly tough for anyone to reach."
Here are some of the tweets:
Dhoni, 40 has been a role model for many since he started playing and him not being the CSK captain anymore, marks the end of an era for the franchise. The wicketkeeper and batter, Dhoni guided CSK to four Indian Premier League titles (2010, 2011, 2018, and 2021), in addition to two titles in the now-defunct Champions League Twenty20 (2010 and 2014).
He has played 204 games out of which he has won 121 and has a winning percentage of 59.60 per cent. Dhoni had also announced his international retirement back in 2020. He last played in the 2019 World Cup.
It may be noted, Jadeja will be the third captain of CSK after Dhoni and Suresh Raina, who was released by the franchise ahead of the IPL 2022 mega auction.
Meanwhile, CSK will face Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) in the first match of this season on March 26. It will be a rematch of the previous year's final where the Dhoni-led team defeated KKR by 27 runs.
