• Guwahati Police Bust Gang Of Vehicle Lifters, 20 Held With 12 Bikes

    The police started this drive following the report of a stolen bike from the Basistha area on January 22
    ASSAM

    Special Squad of the East Guwahati Police District (EGPD) - from Basistha and Hatigaon Police Stations - busted a gang of bike lifters with a series of raids in various parts of Assam and Meghalaya. The special drive resulted in the arrest of 20 thieves, recovery of 12 stolen bikes and cash amounting to Rs 1,37,000.

    It may be mentioned, the gang was active in stealing bikes from various areas of the city. 

    With an incisive investigation, the police unearthed the modus operandi of the gang. The revelations from the interrogation of the arrested helped to trace down bikes in neighbouring states.

    The police started this drive following the report of a stolen bike from the Basistha area on January 22. A Special Squad was then organised to investigate the spurt in cases of thefts from this area.

    On February 16, five persons were arrested vide Case Number 111/22 U/S 379 of IPC and they are - Tiku Boro (18) of Beharbari, Guwahati, Arjun Guwala (25) of Bokajan, Karbi Anglong, Kaushik Mazumdar (18) of Belsor, Nalbari, Dhanjit Boro (24) of Birubari, Guwahati, and Bishnu Boro (20) of Beharbari, Guwahati.

    Following these arrests, the investigation continued for more information. A credible input was secured by the Special Squad from the arrested. Consequently, the Squad conducted raids at various places in Baksa which resulted in the arrest of Bithab Boro of Suwankata in Baksa. A total of seven bikes, reported stolen, were recovered. 

    In order to unearth the entire gang of bike lifters, all the arrested members of the gang were later shown arrested by Hatigaon police station in connection with Case Number 1031/21 U/S 379 of IPC after due permission from the Honourable Court.

    Further interrogation and investigation led to more arrests and recovery of five bikes from various parts of the State as well as from Meghalaya. The police also recovered one Himalayan motorcycle from Borbori in Baksa. While in the raid in Meghalaya, the police successfully retrieved two Pulsar bikes.

    With the recovery of the stolen bikes, the police also arrested 11 persons. They have been identified as - Bithab [email protected] of Suwankata in Baksa, Nirmal [email protected] of Barama in Baksa, Mohidul Islam of Allopatty, Char in Barpeta, Billal Hussain of Allopatty, Char in Barpeta, Romius Rongrin of West Khasi Hills, Meghalaya, Pailoshn N Marak of West Khasi Hills, Meghalaya, Siltin R Marak of West Khasi Hills, Meghalaya, Jacinth Borah of Boko, Indrajit [email protected] of Boko, Mridul Ramchiary of Salbari in Baksa and Dipen [email protected] of Barbara in Baksa.

    The Special Squad continued their probe as the kingpin of this whole network of bike lifters and receivers was still at large. Credible information was secured and a raid was conducted which resulted in the arrest of Vinod Basumatary of Lalmati, Guwahati. One stolen bike and Rs 87,000 cash were recovered from his possession. 

    Further, a follow-up led to the recovery of Rs 60,000 in cash and the arrest of four people. They have been identified as - Vinod Basumatary of Lalmati in Guwahati, Jovianstar Lyngdoh Marshillong of West Khasi Hills, Meghalaya, Ashwally Sunney Lyngdoh, West Khasi Hills, Meghalaya, and Solomon Wanniang of West Khasi Hills, Meghalaya.
