The polling date of the Guwahati Municipal Corporation (GMC) election has been revised from April 19 to April 22, 2022.
The State Election Commission announced the revision of the polling date on Thursday after political parties and social organisations submitted memorandums for the postponement of the election as the same fell within the seven days period of the Bohag Bihu festival in Assam.
“In view of above, a meeting was convened with the political parties on Thursday in the office of the Assam State Election Commission to discuss representations, memorandums of the political parties in detail regarding postponement of date of poll and counting. There was consensus amongst the participants to postpone the poll by few days to honour and celebrate the Bohag Bihu. The State Election Commission Assam having considered the Bohag Bihu being the main cultural festival of Assam and the date of poll falls within the 7 (seven) days period of Bohag Bihu Festival, revises the date of poll and counting of GMC Election, 2022,” said an official order.
Now as per the revised dates, polling will take place on April 22 and the counting of votes will take place on April 24.
