A Kokrajhar District Court on Friday, April 8, awarded death sentence to three accused persons in connection with the rape and murder of two tribal minor girls in the district's Abhaykuthi village.
The accused persons are - Parijul Rahman, Nasibul Ali Sheikh and Muzamil Sheikh.
It may be mentioned, the court on Wednesday had convicted the three in connection with the case.
The accused three were arrested on June 16 last year on the charges of raping and murdering a 16-year-old girl and her 14-year-old sister at Abhaykuthi village under Kokrajhar police station on June 11. The bodies of the girls were found hanging from a tree.
The incident had sent shock waves in the entire state and it was speculated that both the girls had committed suicide. It was later found out in the investigation that they were raped and murdered.
Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma took to Twitter to share the news and wrote, "Hon. Sessions Court, Kokrajhar awarded death sentence to accused Muzamil, Najibul & Farizul in the gruesome case of rape & murder of two tribal minor girls."
Sarma had visited the family in June last year and had directed the police to form SIT and conclude the case fast.
Earlier, the police had arrested seven persons in connection with the case, and during the investigation, hearing and production of witnesses, the above mentioned three were found guilty.
