India on Wednesday reported 4,12,262 lakh fresh cases of Covid-19. This is for the second time that the country’s daily Covid tally crossed the 4-lakh mark. Around 3,980 people died of the deadly virus in the past 24 hours, pushing total fatalities to 2,30,168.
The country is currently battling with the devastating second wave of Covid-19. The surge in infections has overwhelmed the hospitals and crematoriums. It has further left many families scrambling for oxygen and medicines. Despite the country being the world’s biggest producer of Covid-19 vaccines, there are shortages of vaccine shots in various parts of India, further hindering the process of vaccination for the age group of 18-44 years.
The states of Assam, Bihar, Odisha and West Bengal have seen a rise in both the number of daily cases as well as mortality. Twelve states, which includes Maharashtra, Karnataka, Kerala, and Uttar Pradesh, have more than one lakh active cases of Covid-19 each. While on the other hand, thirty districts across the country are showing a continued rise in the number of cases for the past two weeks.
The worst-hit state by the pandemic is Maharashtra. Around 920 new Covid deaths and over 57,000 new cases were reported in the state on Wednesday.
Assam recorded 4,826 new cases of Covid-19 in the last 24 hours. The state saw 55 deaths due to coronavirus on Wednesday, pushing the total fatalities to 1,485. Presently, there are 29,915 active cases of Covid-19 in the state.
