Incumbent Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal on Friday said that fighting the deadly Covid-19 pandemic is the most important thing at this hour rather than discussing about the next Chief Minister of the State.

This was for the first time that Sonowal spoke about the formation of the government by the BJP in Assam. It may be recalled that the Assembly election results were declared on May 2 and the BJP-led alliance swept the polls in the State.

“We will form the government in Assam…there is no two way about it. There is nothing to worry about it. But right now our top priority is to protect the citizens from the Covid-19 pandemic,” said Sonowal while speaking to media persons in Guwahati.

He added, “In two-three days everything will be clear…you all will get to know. Right now, it is the responsibility of all human beings to fight against Covid-19 every moment, every day.”

Earlier, BJP’s national president JP Nadda had said that post-poll violence in West Bengal delayed the decision and announcement on Assam’s next Chief Minister.

Sonowal said that the BJP's Parliamentary Board will soon the take the final decision regarding the Chief Minister of Assam.

The incumbent Chief Minister on Friday noted that there is a need to follow norms to prevent the spread of the deadly Covid-19.

Sonowal on Friday visited the Covid Care Centres at the Sarusajai Stadium and Royal Global University in Guwahati.

Speaking to media persons, Sonowal said, “We must follow the rules issued by the Health Ministry to prevent the transmission of the Covid-19. I urge the citizens to wear a mask, sanitize and maintain social distancing in order to contain the spread of Covid-19.”

He added, “We are leaving no stone unturned to ensure good health of our people. The Covid-19 situation is alarming as the cases of new infections and fatalities are increasing every day. In order to avoid a complete lockdown type situation, we must follow Covid-19 preventive rules.”

Sonowal on Thursday held virtual meetings with the Deputy Commissioners (DCs), Superintendents of Police, District Medical Officers to take stock of the Covid-19 situation in their respective districts.
