The Opposition INDIA bloc is expected to nominate DMK Rajya Sabha MP Tiruchi Siva as its Vice-Presidential candidate, setting up a contest between two leaders from Tamil Nadu and seeking to turn regional dynamics to its advantage in the upcoming election.

The Opposition INDIA bloc is likely to field senior DMK leader and Rajya Sabha MP Tiruchi Siva as its candidate for the Vice-Presidential election, as per several reports. The final decision is expected after a meeting at Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge’s residence on Monday, August 18.

The move is seen as a strategic counter to the NDA, which has nominated Maharashtra Governor C.P. Radhakrishnan, also from Tamil Nadu. By backing Siva, the Opposition hopes to consolidate support in the southern state while presenting a seasoned parliamentarian with strong DMK credentials.

Siva’s candidature is being viewed as a unifying choice, as DMK members are expected to rally firmly behind their own nominee.

The Vice-Presidential election was necessitated after Jagdeep Dhankhar resigned citing health reasons. Nomination papers are to be filed by August 22, while voting will take place on September 9.
