In a major development, the Gauhati High Court has granted bail to Dr Waliul Islam, who was arrested along with his wife, Dr Sangeeta Datta, in connection with allegations of physically and sexually assaulting their two adopted children in Guwahati. The arrest, made in May 2023, followed a series of disturbing revelations that sparked outrage across the state.
According to reports, the court approved Dr Islam’s bail on furnishing two sureties of Rs 50,000 each. However, it is still unclear whether the doctor will be released immediately, as both he and his wife face additional pending cases related to the same matter.
The case had come to light after shocking visuals surfaced online, showing one of the adopted minor daughters tied up on a terrace under the scorching sun. The couple was subsequently charged under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act, 2012, along with several sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC), drawing widespread condemnation and calls for justice.
