Zubeen Garg, the iconic Assamese singer known for his soulful voice and contributions to Indian music, tragically passed away on September 19, 2025, at the age of 52.

The official cause of death for renowned singer Zubeen Garg has been confirmed as drowning, according to the death certificate issued by the Singapore government. The certificate was received following a post-mortem conducted after Garg’s tragic accident on September 19, 2025, while attending the Northeast India Festival in Singapore.

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma stated that the Singapore High Commission sent the certificate confirming drowning as the cause of death. Efforts are ongoing to obtain the complete post-mortem report through the Chief Secretary of Assam and the Singapore Ambassador.

Despite immediate medical attention, including CPR and hospitalization at Singapore General Hospital, Garg was declared deceased in the ICU around 2:30 PM IST.

The singer’s last rites are scheduled for September 23, 2025, at Kamarkuchi village near Guwahati, in accordance with his family’s wishes. Currently, his mortal remains are kept at the Arjun Bhogeswar Baruah Sports Complex (Sarusajai Stadium) in Guwahati, where thousands of fans have gathered to pay tribute. The Assam government has declared a three-day state mourning period.

Zubeen Garg’s untimely death has left a profound void in the Assamese music community, with fans and peers remembering his enduring contributions to regional and national music.
