Amid growing controversy over the Special Intensive Revision of electoral rolls in Bihar, senior Congress leader P Chidambaram has accused the Election Commission of attempting to alter the electoral character and voting patterns of states. Describing the move as an “abuse of powers,” Chidambaram urged for a strong political and legal response to what he termed a deeply concerning development.
In a post on X, the former home minister raised alarm over the possibility of nearly 65 lakh voters being disenfranchised in Bihar, calling the ongoing revision process “curiouser and curiouser.” Simultaneously, he expressed concern over reports of 6.5 lakh new voters being added in Tamil Nadu, which he described as not only alarming but also “patently illegal.”
Chidambaram also condemned the classification of migrant workers as “permanently migrated,” calling it both an insult to their identity and a violation of democratic rights. Questioning the logic behind this move, he emphasized that migrant workers have traditionally returned to their home states, such as Bihar, to vote in state elections, and that this right must not be tampered with.
