Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Tuesday, February 17, announced that former Assam Congress president Bhupen Borah will formally join the Bharatiya Janata Party on February 22. CM Sarma said BJP leader Dilip Saikia will oversee the formalities, and several other Congress leaders from Guwahati and North Lakhimpur are expected to join alongside him.
Sarma described Borah as the last recognised Hindu leader in Congress and said his induction into the BJP, approved by party National President Nitin Nabin, will be a “homecoming,” with respect and dignity accorded to him.
Earlier, the Chief Minister visited Borah’s residence in the Ghoramara area of Guwahati following his resignation from Congress. Borah’s wife and son welcomed him with an ‘aarti’ during the visit, reflecting a warm and cordial reception.
