As soon as news of the fire spread, people ran out of all exit gates for safety.

A fire broke out at the main venue of the UN COP30 Climate Summit in Belem, Brazil, injuring at least 13 people and prompting a mass evacuation. The incident occurred around 2 pm on Thursday in the Blue Zone, the area that hosts key meetings, negotiations, country pavilions, the media centre and offices of high-profile dignitaries, including the main plenary hall.

As smoke spread, thousands of attendees rushed toward the exits to escape. According to the UN COP30 Organising Committee, thirteen individuals were treated on-site for smoke inhalation, and their conditions continue to be monitored with appropriate medical care provided.

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres was among those present and was swiftly evacuated by UNDSS security personnel. India’s Environment Minister Bhupender Yadav and the Indian delegation were also inside the Blue Zone at the time but managed to exit safely along with other officials.
